Benefits of Memory Exercises

“The energy of the mind is the essence of life” - Aristotle

Research shows that keeping your brain active increases its vitality. Doing new things in new ways appears to help retain brain cells and connections. It may even produce new brain cells. In essence, breaking out of your routine and trying something new can help keep your brain healthy.


Quick 30 second mental exercises while at your desk and perform one of these about every hour.

1. Mental math problem – Write down some simple addition or subtraction math problems and do them in your head.

2. Read a short piece of poetry and visualize the words in your head.

3. Doodle a picture

4. Write a creative sentence

5. Close your eyes and visualize the path you took to work, school or exercising

6. Write a word with your opposite hand

7. Take a deep slow breath 3 times and visualize the path of the oxygen into your system.

8. Learn a new vocabulary word and use it throughout your day.


There are so many exercises you can work into your day, the key is to keep them new and different from your usual daily routine.


Exercises when you have more time

1. Card games – Solitaire, Memory, Sets, Spot It…..the kids games are great

2. Pick up a new hobby using your hands

3. Read books aloud

4. Put together a puzzle

5. Learn some new dance moves

6. Draw something…..anything!

7. Learn something creative like painting, carpentry, sewing, pottery, photography or just get crafty.

8. Build something big or small. Get out the kids Legos or blocks and just get building.


There are a ton of kids games and crafts available that are made especially for brain function, so go find something that sparks your interest!
